While driving down a main street in my town, I always see throngs of young girls running on the bike path adjacent to the street. Without exception, there are headphones in every one of their ears. Now I'm not saying that these are bad in and of themselves. I mean, hell, if I have to run (I hate it) you best believe I'm drowning my sorrows in some 80's hair band music.... but I NEVER lose focus of my surroundings.
Too often, when the earphones go in, the brain shuts off.
Not good.
The trick is to enjoy the music while remaining aware of your surroundings.
Look around on campus and everywhere you go you will see people, guys and gals, absolutley zonked in their own music-induced world, oblivious to anything around them. All this is is a shift from focusing on one thing to another. By developing your awareness skills to the point where you can enjoy music, sense someone next to you, text while walking and stop at the crosswalk all at the same time (it sounds like a lot but when you really think about it it's not all that complex-I mean, we listen to the radio, talk on the phone, read road signs, operate the A/C or windshield wipers, avoid potholes and watch out for other drivers and pedestrians for cryin' out loud!) then you will see just how capable you are of multi tasking when your energy is not fixated on one thing or another.
Awareness is your first line of defense - the White Collar Warrior Self Protection Skills Home Study Course is your last resort. What happens in between is anyone's guess...
Til next time,
Study hard, be smart and keep your head on straight-I'll be back soon!
