Child Abduction Alert

I was watching King of Queens re-runs last night (I LOVE that show) when a Child Abduction Alert came on the television. I am so glad that they can now run alerts like that on the TV - so many people have access to that information now, often times minutes after the report is made.


One thing that should not be overlooked is the idea that "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of the cure"

Somewhat off topic, but hey...

The other day I was driving, I saw a bumper sticker that simply said, "Trust God Anyway..."


I thought, how true!

In case you don't know me, I'm a religious guy-that doesn't mean I preach or evangelize, and I sure as shit don't end every sentence with "God willing," or "Praise God"...to be honest, the non-denominationals and born again's really piss me off in that respect. Maybe you've noticed the same-we all know people who are scrounging to get by, unemployed for years, etc. but they attend every church meeting...I want to tell them WAKE UP! God gave you talent to use-and while there is definitely a time and place to worship, there too is a time and place to exercise your talents and trust that God has entrusted you with everything you need.

I wish more folks who are "religious" would take a more proactive approach to their circumstances instead of just praying and waiting...praying and waiting...tell you what, you pray, and I'll go make shit happen...because God gave me all I need to do so and I know that there is no greater gift I can give to God than to make the most out of myself.

When a drill fails...

We've all seen it - a "self defense" instructor explains then demonstrates a drill, and while doing so the student attacks in an unexpected or incongruent manner with the drill. This tends to frustrate the instructor, who then backtalks and says to the student, "No,no, no...attack this way" and the drill continues.


The problem is, when one thinks in a technique-specific way, problems like this are bound to occur. Rather than get frustrated when a drill fails, be thankful that it does, for it exposes the danger of training and thinking in a technique-reactionary mindset. It also demonstrates the unpredictable, sloppy and staccato nature of a real-time attack.  Now, I'm not saying that all rtraining should be balls to the wall slam-bang. As the maxim goes, "learn the form to seek the formless...learn the way to find your own way."  When learning a technique, practice slow at first to get the nuance and body mecahnics down, then gradually up the speed and intensity, then apply if full force in an uncooperative setting...
BUT

always train in a 'target-specific" mentailty - every time someone attacks you, they expose one of their main targets - eyes, throat, groin, or shins. there's no getting around that. if you train to hit these targets hard, fast and often, your techniques will always find their way to the appropriate targets.

Focus on what you want-and train to protect it

The other day I arrived for training feeling beat, run down, sore and sluggish...I did not want to train and sure as shit didn't want to teach.
However, I remembered what Wallace Wattles said is his book, The Science of Getting Rich
The Science Of Getting Rich

"Gratitude is what keeps you connected to power."

I decided to keep my focus on having a good class. You know what happened? I got a great workout, my maladies went away and my focus shifted from bitching to giving my students a great experience.

How does that relate to self defense?

Be grateful for everything you have in your life-your health, your family and friends, your ability to train at all, etc...and keep that in mind while you train. I guarantee you your sessions will become much more productive. Simple, direct and effective is the order of the day when it comes to protecting yourself and your loved ones.

Among the countless reasons one should look into reading Gavin DeBecker's book, The Gift of Fear,


The Gift of Fear

is his description of the ways and means predators use to get close to their victims.
He states that "charm" is not a noun, it is a verb.  People are not "charming," they use "charm" to elicit a favorable reaction from others. Predators use charm to gain victims trust, so that when they attack, the defenses of whomever they choose to impose their will on will be down and disarmed.

This past weekend I attended my sister's wedding (my other sis is getting hitched in July) and I couldn't help but feel emotional. As happy as I am for her, part of me felt uneasy, because as she embarked on a new phase in her life, she ventured into unknown territory. That unknown made the big brother in me kick into over-protection mode. Thus, I remembered this piece form DeBecker's book and decided to impart it to all of you in this blog.
DeBecker's second piece of advice in conjunction with the idea that people USE charm is that it is ok to be "rude."
I've touched on this one before vis a vis my girlfriend and unwanted attention. however, this one holds water any time be it a vacation, a gas station or (as in my sister's case) a honeymoon.

Do not be afraid to say "no," or to assert yourself. Using confident and strong language, maintaining awareness at all times of your surroundings and situation and employing the body posture of being non-aggressive yet ready (as you will find in the White Collar Warrior Self Protection Skills Home Study Course available here: www.whitecollarwarrior.com/Products.html) you will project an air that says to a potential attacker, "move along." Should you, however, find yourself in a situation where charm is being employed, ALWAYS keep your mind alert. Many victims have become victims by their refusal to say "no" to unsolicited assistance.

The Four Basic Truths of Violent Assault-Part 4

The last of Sgt Rory Miller's 4 basic truths of violent assault states that...
"Attacks happen with MORE POWER than most people realize."

This ties hand in hand with #3-the sudden nature of an attack. If you are a predator, are you going to dilly-dally or are you going to hit them hard, fast and powerfully?
Option B.
Proper training MUST address this, as without training for a sudden burst of power the techniques or skills ets one spends so much time practicing mean nothing. Have a friend attack you at a leisurely pace and notice how welll you can pull off moves...then have them attack you FULL FORCE, and you will see just how big a gap exists between what you can do in training and what you can pull off in reality...

The Four Basic Truths of Violent Assault-Part 3

The third "truth" of violent assault, as per Sgt. Rory Miller's book, Meditations on Violence, states that
"Attacks happen MORE SUDDENLYthan most people believe."


He goes on to state that "An assault is based on the threat's assessment of his chances. If he can't surprise, he often won't attack...when the attack happens, it's almost always a surprise."
That's not to say if someone is giving you a glare at the bar or if a few gangbanger thugs approach you in a paking lot or walking down the street. That is a different scenario entirely, one he also addresses at length in his book and one we will cover in this blog in the near future. What we are talking about here is a predator; one whose motive isn't territorial or macho-based; one whose motive is to do you harm. This type of predator is calculating, patient and much more dangerous as he has the element of surprise. Much like the "shock and awe" tactics used by the military, a predator will wait and then attack suddenly, so as to catch the victim off guard and (seemingly) helpless. For all you history buffs out there, the Battle of the Alamo was not such an attack-Santa Anna's decimation at the hands of Sam Houston and the Texans 6 weeks later at the Battle of San Jacinto was.
Awareness is KEY. proper training to handle a surprise and forceful attack is IMPERATIVE. hitting an opponent's vital targets in a quick, nasty and brutal way is ESSENTIAL.


Your training MUST address all of these factors. Simple, Effective and Practical.

states that attacks happen FASTER than more people realize.

Fights start quickly and most often, the one who gets the first shot in wins. It's the old "firstest with the mostest" theory, and it is true. Real violent assaults are quick, ugly and overpowering.

Think back if you have ever taken a "self defense" class. After a brief overview of the "technique," you paired off, and practiced the "technique" on a classmate or friend, and most likely with little or no speed. While this is beneficial for learning a technique, it offers little in the way of preparing someone to address a situation coming out of a supermarket with bags of groceries in their hands, not thinking about that neat wrist lock they learned against a guy who just stands there like George McFly and grabs your wrist then waits for you to systematically dismantle him.

All of a sudden, something happens, and they freeze...

why?

They were not prepared for the SPEED of an attack.

Remember, some thug isn't going to sell tickets to see his rape or mugging. he wants to get in, get out and get away.

details (among many other extremely useful concepts) what he calls the "Four Basic Truths of Violent Assault." These are, specifically, that violent assaults happen CLOSER, FASTEr, MORE SUDDENLY and with MORE POWER than people realize.

Let's look at #1, that attacks happen CLOSER than people realize.

Most "self defense" courses rely on such techniques as defending against a jab, cross or haymaker hook. That's fine, but in training they ASSUME that the attacker will face them head-on and throw punches like a trained fighter. I don't know about you but every fight I've seen starts where the two people fighting are close enough to kiss each other, and every sucker punch or bum rush I've seen looks nothing like the defense for a boxer's cross or jab. Honesty in training is key, and while drills designed for the "defender" to pull off a snazzy move looks great and is fun, they offer next to nothing visadequately preparing someone to address the reality of a violent encounter.

Remember, to quote David Carradine in the old Kung Fu TV show, "men do not beat drums before they hunt for tigers." If someone is going to attack you, they will wait to do so until they think you are unaware, unprepared and unable to resist.

The search for the best fake stuff out there...

Self defense training, no matter how realistic or reality-based, is still just that, "Training." Reality self defense pioneer Tony Blauer calls it "the search for the best fake stuff out there."

Does this mean that just because it's "training,' and not "real," that it is not worth practicing?

Not necessarily.

Studies have shown that PROPER training, i.e., training that is REALISTIC in the sense of scenario drills, surprise attack, adrenal stress conditioning and target-specific attacks, is very beneficial. Remember, you fight like you train.
Train with an element of danger and realism and with the intent of attacking an opponent's vital targets (eyes, throat, groin and shins)while recognizing the fact that in a self defense encounter that you will almost always be caught off guard, and your odds of survival just went way up.

Train in a way that requires you to memorize complex motions and complicated moves that are difficult to pull off against an uncooperating attacker, and all I can say is "good luck to you...you'll need it."

The Power of Assumption...

What are assumptions?

Assumptions are things you believe to be true without really considering them.

For example, if someone pulls a knife on you and tells you that you will be okay if you just do what they tell you to do, many people will comply because they superimpose their own value system ion their attackers, i.e., they ASSUME that the attacker's thought process is similar to their own.

To that I ask, WHY ARE THEY MUGGING YOU?

Now defense against a knife is a completely different animal. My own personal opinion is that if someone wants my wallet, screw it-here, take it.
BUT-
If, after giving them my wallet, they want me to come with them-it's on. I figure for every step I take, my odds of survival go down. In that case, I will retalliate as, at that point, I have nothing to lose.

If you notice, that last sentence was an assumption in itself but it was an educated one. If soemone tells me that they want my wallet and I give it to him, thus ends the exchange. if they then say that I have to go down this alley or get into that car, the parameters have completely changed. To assume that becasue you weren't hurt after giving him your wallet or purse, you won't be hurt if you go with this person is not only wrong but very dangerous.

The Chemical Cocktail...

In reading Sgt Rory Miller's fantastic book, Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts training and Real-World Violence,
Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence one aspect he discusses at great length is the chemical cocktail,i.e., the adrenaline dump that takes place in your body prior to any physical altercation. He states that while the chemical cocktail makes most people more dangerous, it tends to make trained fighters LESS dangerous because while it increase strenght, short-term speed and pain tolerance it DECREASES fine and complex motor skill activity.

In other words, the old "if someone grabs your RIGHT wrist, do THIS," type of crap just doesn't cut it. Self defense is all about applying the maximum amount of damage to the opponent while sustaining as little damage as possible in the quickest way. And, based on the statistics from Miller's research, the only sure-fire way to achieve such goals is to employ GROSS motor skills consisting of simple, direct, efficient and thereby practical moves designed to target an opponent's vulnerable points.

My fave quotes from Bruce Lee...

Here are two of my all time favorite quotes from The Man himself...equally applicable to sparring, competitions and (the only thing I really care about vis a vis martial arts training) SELF DEFENSE.
They go a little something like this...

"The great mistake is to anticipate the outcome of the engagement. You ought not be thinking of whether it ends in victory or defeat, but let nature take its course and your tools will strike at the right moment..."

and my personal favorite...

"Forget about winning and losing, forget about pride and pain. Let an opponent graze your skin and you smash into his flesh; let an opponent smash into your flesh and you fracture his bone; let an opponent fracture your bone and you take his life! Do not be concerned with your escaping safely; lay your life before him!”

The first one is relevant to our situation in the sense that when shit goes down, your mind must turn off, you must be on auto pilot mode, programmed to dismantle whoever asks you to fuck them up (by either attacking you, your family, loved ones, etc.)At that point, if your mind starts working, you start losing. You must abandon your mind, and just let your (hopefuilly proper) training come out. Like a T-shirt I saw says, "If you have to stop and think...it's too late!"

The second quote perfectly encapsulates how one must view a life-or-death encounter-and let's be honest, not every life or death scenario looks like a mugger with a gun or rapist with a knife. It could be a young kid who rear ends you in traffic and then gets out of his car, a drunk middle aged guy at the local pub, or an irate customer at a gas station. You don't have the luxury of knowing when and where, so you must be prepared to do whatever it takes.

Like the bible verse goes, "he who tries to save his life will lose it; he who lays his life down will save it."

If I'm going to get into it, that bastard better knock my ass out or incapacitate me, because as long as I can stand I'm looking to fuck this guy up. And anyone who trains with me can tell you, I do have one hell of a hard head=-)

A million to one shot...

Above my desk I have the movie poster from the original Rocky movie framed. The iconic shot of Sylvester Stallone looking down from the top of the steps in Philadelphia with his fists raised gives me chills every time I look at it. The tagline for the poster reads, "His whole life was a million-to-one shot."

I love that movie - and when you think about it, there is probably only about 15-20 minutes of fighting in the whole 2 hours or so. What I love the most (besides the training montage-if that doesn't motivate you, you're dead) is the story-here's a guy with no options, no resources, no future-then God gives him a chance. EVERYTHING for him is riding on this title shot-of which everyone BUT him views as merely a show; a joke. To Rocky Balboa, it's his one and only shot to lift himself out of the thick-necked loser world of mediocrity that he's known his whole life. One of my favorite scenes is when he picks up a beat up photo of himself as a kid, and looks at it, his eyes seemingly apologizing to his deceased parents for not making more of himself...that scene always gets me, every time.

In life, I think we need to take a more "Rocky" approach to everything we do - giving it everything we have as if our very existence depends on it.

When it comes to protecting yourself, we could all learn from Rocky's character and the way he views his shot at the title. It's not just about him, it's about giving Adrian a better life, it's about proving to himself and his parents, and GOD, that he is more than what he presently is.

For us, it's about our family and loved ones, our mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, friends and family.

"I Was Trying to Let Him Down Easy..."

I am still getting through Gavin DeBecker's fantastic book, The Gift of Fear.

In my opinion it is a must-read for every college bound female (and all women in general, for that matter). One chapter that particularly resonated with me vis a vis this blog was Chapter 11, titled "I Was Trying To Let Him Down Easy."

My girlfriend is very attractive, and as such, when she goes out she garners much unwanted and unwelcome attention, especially from the douchebaggery-ensconced, Affliction shirt wearing, tanned, spikey haired strokejobs that frequent so many bars now. This clearly bothers her, however, she tells me that she does not tell them she's not interested because she doesn't want to come off as a "bitch."

Like it or not, people at some level care what other people think of them. That's just called being human. If a girl breaks up with a guy and he keeps pursuing her or if a guy has a crush on a girl and keeps pursuing her, in both cases the men think that this "persistence" will prove their love for them.

As DeBecker states in this chapter, "persistence only proves persistence-it does not prove love. The fact that a romantic pursuer is relentless doesn't mean you are special-it means he is troubled."

There is a right way and a wrong way to handle unwarranted attention or advances; regardless of how you handle attention, one safety mechanism should always be in place-the ability to protect yourself.

He who hath, more will be given...

I enjoy reading Bible passages-a little each day. I don't say that to try and impress anyone, I merely bring it up because the title of this blog represents my favorite Bible story, the Parable of the Ten Talents. I'm not going to paraphrase it - look it up for yourself (Matthew 25:14-30)but the gist of it is this, "he who has, more will be given, he who doesn't have, even what he has will be taken away."
What does that mean for us?

Simple.

Gratitude

In his 1911 classic, The Science of Getting Rich (the book that inspired Rhonda Byrne's 2006 blockbuster hit, The Secret) New Thought writer Wallace Wattles spoke of the many facets of thinking in what he put "The Certain Way." One aspect that he gave pre-eminence to above all others was this: Gratitude. Wattles spoke of gratitude this way:

"You cannot exercise much power without gratitude, because it is
gratitude that keeps you connected with power."


I am so grateful for my health (having watched my aunt slowly die of ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease) so I am adamant about keeping myself fit, even on days when I'm tired or sore or otherwise mentally "checked out". I try to do at least something physical - for me and for my Aunt Sharon.

I am so grateful for my employment in today's economy, so I demonstrate that gratitude through my genuine love for what I do. People can see this when I'm at work, and the vibrance of my facility I believe is in no small part to the enthusiasm and genuine enjoyment my job provides me.

I am so very grateful for my family, friends and loved ones, that I will do whatever I can to keep them safe. I train hard, I train often and I train consistently-because I know the stakes.

It is out of gratitude that we derive power.

Often times people equate self defense with a Physical attack-and with good reason; Physical attacks make headlines...however, too often people are attacked and more long term damage is done by being attacked in the Psychological or Emotional areas.

Abuse is abuse, no matter what-no one should have to live in fear. Don't think that just because someone is not hitting you that they are not abusing you.

No one deserves to live that way, and while learning physical techniques is a very necessary aspect of simple, practical and effective self defense and personal protection training, never forget that the emotional and psychological aspects are just as, if not more so, important.

If you suspect anyone is being abused, do that person a favor and contact any of the abuse resources on the internet or your local law enforcement agency.

Remember, it takes balls to do the right thing...even if you've thought this in the past, it's not too late.

This is one stupid thing to do...

If there is one thing in this world I hate it is when I see some ditzy teenage girl run up to the gas station or 7-11, leave her car running, go inside to buy whatever, then jump right back in and drive off.

Hello?!

If I were a predator, I couldn't ask for a better scenario-talkin about serving me something on a silver platter...

DO yourself a favor-turn your goddamn car off, lock the door, then go inside. It might only be a 1 in 1000 chance...but do you want to be that 1?

One of my favorite movies growing up was "The Untouchables." Sean Connery, one of my favorite actors, asks Kevin Costner this very same question when Costner's character (Eliot Ness) is wondering how to catch Al Capone...

Closest weapon, closest target...

The other nite after coming home from the bar, I went to Taco Bell. As I was walking to my condo I thought, "what if someone came up to me right now? What would I do?"

Wanna know what I'd do?

Throw my food right in his face, hit him in the balls and get the hell out of there.
